Water Treatment Chemicals

Boiler corrosion is costly. Metal repairs and maintenance shutdown runs into millions of dollars. Yet it is relatively inexpensive to prevent with the proper chemical.

In a steam generating plant, the main culprit is oxygen. The oxygen corrosion affects the feedwater system, the boiler, and the steam condensate system. Elimination of oxygen is performed first by mechanical deareation followed by the use of a chemical scavenger to remove the residual oxygen. Sodium sulfite has been widely used as scavenger but it brings solids to the boiler water. Hydrazine Hydrate was the replacement of choice for its efficiency as a strong passivation agent. However, its toxicity and the need for special handling and regulated storage makes it undesirable. Formulations of the chemical carbohydrazide, such as AID’s Oxy-OFF, have shown to be very effective and safe alternatives.
